Saturday. 16. Woke up and saw a bald eagle in a tree. Enjoyed the stunning mountain views from our townhome. Took a walk after lunch. Went to the bakery and they were sold out, no surprise for a Saturday. Walked through the cram packed grocery. We can survive here with the foodstuff that is stuffed into the little grocery. Saw a bunch of local kids riding bikes and playing. Worked on our upcoming calendar by looking at various rental stays. We have an in-person interview on Sunday at 3 with the possible 1 week house sit in Anchorage. Baked a Lemon Olive Oil cake.
Sunday. 17. The rain has been coming down all night. We get to worship just before the start of class at 9am. I am welcomed into the kids class. There are two kids classes today. I go with Audrey into the 7-12 year olds class. They are into their curriculum and are understanding the whole story of the Bible. It’s enjoyable to be there with them. I got to add a couple of comments through the lesson. After a good lesson, communion and singing, we concluded and stayed around visiting for a while before heading to lunch. We went grocery shopping after lunch and then to our house sit interview. We got the tour of the house and met Kesuki the black five year old male cat. Jeff and Tawny asked us if we wanted to do their sit, and we accepted. They showed us most of the details we need to get through and arrive on the 30th for our week long stay. We drove back to Girdwood and made one of our favorite meals of black beans and lean ground beef with toppings. Our evening was usual for us, watching some of our favorite shows and having popcorn.

Monday. 18. Today I remember that it’s my brother’s birthday. Wayne is the oldest at 69 this year. Hopefully I have that number correct! Lol. He was 7 when I was born in October 1964. I sent him an electronic greeting. Darrell made pancakes for our usual breakfast, after our morning workout. We lingered as long as we wanted and enjoyed our morning. I called my sister Linda who is less than a year younger than Wayne. We are getting into the habit of talking once each week to catch up and enjoy each other’s company. Her husband has sold some of his property where he ran his business. This is a big transition for him into downsizing through his retirement, and figuring out what he is doing now.

Tuesday. 19. We drove down to Seward and back. It was a gorgeous snowy mountain drive. The clouds were low with a constant overcast. In Seward, the beginning of the Iditarod race, there was not much visibility to see the mountains in the bay. They were covered with clouds and there was a constant drizzle. We walked up and down 2 streets, bought a gelato and then drove back. Tacos for dinner.
Wednesday. 20. I called my friend Laura today. We caught up with our week. I cooked a roast beef dinner for lunch in the provided instapot. Our lunch was true comfort food and we feasted. After lunch we took a walk along the river. It’s drizzling rain and hazy. We also stopped for a cappuccino. Driving to Anchorage for Bible class in a couple hours. I booked tickets online for tomorrow in Seward for the Kenai Fjords tour. I’m looking forward to it. I’m hoping to see colorful puffins! I’ve loved these birds since I was 4-5 years old and used to spend loads of time on that page in our one encyclopedia book.

Thursday. 21. Today we drove down to Seward. The rain is pouring down. We arrived at 10:30 a.m., left our car in the tour company parking lot, hopped onto the shuttle and rode to the office next to the marina. The shuttle driver was a woman in her upper 70’s. She was from New York, but let us know that she was really a nomad like us. She is one of the many retired people who come to Alaska and work for the summer season. We were waiting in the gift shop of the tour company at the marina. Outside it was in the 30’s and pouring down rain. About 100 people boarded the cruise tour boat. We found seats at a table with a group of 3 women on the other side of the table from us. We were at the bow with windows to the front and side of us. We both put a seasick patch on. I had an extra layer of clothing with my waterproof pants. I was not cold with my extra layer. We got our introductory safety information and expectations for our 6 hour cruise. The crew passed our lunches out soon after leaving the marina. We were served chicken burritos with plenty of corn and black beans and cheese inside. There was also a few tortilla chips and a serving of sour cream. The burritos were hot and tasty. Not long after finishing lunch, the captain warned us about our rough ride. It got rough as we were going from our fjord into the bay of Alaska. The water was so choppy and I was glad that I had put on a seasick patch. There were a few minutes here and there during the next several hours where we were in a calm water area. However, most of our cruise was like an extremely rough adventure ride at an amusement park. I was quite uncomfortable for the last couple hours of our trip. I fell asleep at some point, and woke up about an hour later. I was feeling the effects of the ride and of the medicine, and it took me until the next day or two to fully recover. We ate dinner in Seward before making the two hour drive back to our airbnb in Girdwood.

Friday. 22. We slept in and took our time in the morning as we prepared to pack up and move to Kenai. On our way to Kenai we drove through beautiful snowy mountains. When the mountains seem to come to an end, there was a sign that indicated the end of the scenic byway. We stopped and ate lunch at a BBQ place. Once we got to Kenai, we went shopping at Walmart for our week long stay. Then we went and checked into our airbnb. It’s a 2 bedroom and 2 bath home. We settled into our little house quickly and comfortably. There’s a large window that we have seen an eagle fly by a couple times a day.
