Monday. 17. Jeremy goes to work at the embassy. Andrea is a volunteer for the commissary. She’s fairly new to her position and has had some challenges this week with a sick employee and trying to have some open hours for the store. Darrell and I stay with Quinn while she is sorting this out and spending some long hours to get things accomplished reasonably. We learn about getting in and out of the apartment building and taking Quinn to his closest playground.
Tuesday. 18. Collard greens are a common vegetable here. Other common items are bananas, pineapples, limes, potatoes, and more.

Wednesday. 19. Today is Jeremy’s 33rd birthday. He’s our third son. Today we all are packed up and taking a 2 ½ hour flight to Recife (pronounced ‘Hay-cee-fee”). We have rooms booked at a seaside resort for 5 nights, and then a flight back on Monday to Brasilia. Darrell and I shared one checked suitcase for this weekend and carried-on our backpacks. We took our own Uber ride to the airport which is 20-30 minutes from the apartment. The weather is sunny and dry, about 70-75 degrees, and this is expected every day in this ‘winter’ season here in Brasilia. We check in at the airport. Then we have time to eat lunch at a restaurant before our flight leaves. We ate at a burger restaurant. I had a grilled chicken sandwich. French fries are the expected side here, but I order ‘no potatoes’ or ‘nao batatas’. On our Latam flight we were served a small drink and a small snack bag of Brazilian cheese puff balls. They do love their cheese here and they put is in so many things! Lol. We arrived to Recife airport, got the rental car shuttle to a close location. At the rental car business, Jeremy had a reserved car, but he still had to wait in line and for our car it took 30-60 minutes. The sun went down while we were waiting around 6pm. Then we got into our car with our luggage, car seat with Quinn and Jeremy drove us south to our resort, another hour in the dark. It went by pretty quickly as we enjoyed each other’s company. Darrell was in the navigation spot and we arrived to our Armacao resort near Porto de Galinhas. Once we loaded our bags to our rooms, we met back in the lobby to walk to a restaurant for dinner. We ended up at a hotel down the street that had a quiet restaurant with a menu that we could order meals from. It was about 8pm when we ate dinner. Quinn was able to order a strawberry juice before he needed to go to bed. Andrea wasn’t hungry by this time and took him back to our hotel for bed while the three of us waited for our meals and ate. |

Friday. 21. Walk the beach 30 minutes to the town just south of our resort. We went to a pizza restaurant in the town.
Nomad Notes. This week we lived with Jeremy, Andrea and Quinn. I asked a lot of questions about what it is like here and many times they have answers and many times they are still figuring it out too. They helped us navigate shopping, ordering at restaurants and getting in and out of their apartment building with locked security doors. Jeremy walked us around the neighborhood, took us to a coffee shop, drove us to a Portuguese church similar to our US church, took us shopping at some food stands, showed us the closed highway turned pedestrian zone with street food and music, and more.
