#33 June 19, 2021 1 of 4 weeks complete in Gurley, AL and Son Jeremy's 30th B-day
Our 1st week is completed for our 4 week stay in Gurley, AL. We came back to the area of Huntsville after being on the road for 6 weeks. I was ready to unpack my suitcase into a closet, and I have. It seems luxurious to shop and put groceries into our refrigerator, and buy farm eggs from the boys at church again!
Gurley is 11 miles east of Huntsville, and then add another 4 miles straight up Keel Mountain to a ridge top home on Blowing Cave Road. We are occupying the one bedroom detached house next to the large manor house. This house is well built and comfortable with central air and a washer and dryer. Our favorite feature is the screened in porch with a view of the trees, mountains and sunrise.
It is 10 degrees cooler here than in Huntsville, and this is a relief from the summer heat. We enjoy eating our meals on the screened porch. It takes me 40 minutes to drive to my office, but I am enjoying the country scenery and the space of driving and thinking. Darrell has driven into Huntsville a few times too and he also enjoys the drive. This house is like being on vacation because it is in an out of the way place and it is quiet and comfortable. We are about 50 minutes from our church. Coming back here after dark is a small and enjoyable challenge watching for deer coming out of the woods. One afternoon we saw two foxes walking through our backyard.
The town of Gurley has a Mexican restaurant, several gas stations, a Piggly Wiggly grocery store, and a few other businesses and restaurants. It is situated on a divided highway. Coming up the mountain is a bit easier than shifting to low gear driving down the mountain to avoid braking too much. Past our house, going down the mountain toward Owens Crossroads is a 20 minute drive in total that begins with 2 miles straight down a curvy narrow paved road. The rest of the 12 mile drive is through lovely country fields and homes.
Today I slept in until 6 a.m. We did our daily DDP yoga routine. Then Darrell made gluten free pancakes. He shaped some coarsely ground sausage into patties that we got at Piggly Wiggly and we had that local taste with our french press coffee, berries and maple syrup. This is one of my favorite times together! Our Saturday breakfast. We did Spanish lessons, and Darrell is way ahead and way more motivated than me on our Duolingo apps. He pays for his app, and I go very slowly on the free version! We talked alot today about our way of living and our changes and impending retirements.
We called our son, Jeremy who turned 30 today to say "Happy Birthday", and see what he is up to with his wife and infant son. They are doing well in Vancouver, Washington and had a fun day planned at their farmer's market.
We stayed around our house today, except that I went to Owens Crossroads to Walmart and picked up a few items for our week. I couldn't get blue cheese at P.Wiggly, and I promised to make some yogurt blue cheese dressing for lunch at Phoebe's tomorrow. While I was in Owens Crossroads, I saw Cove BBQ and bought ribs for dinner.
This week we helped (just a small amount because they were almost finished) cleaning our son, Eric and his wife, Erin's house that they are selling and closing on soon. I got to see their new, larger house that they have purchased as they await the birth of their first child in September. While there we were able to have lunch with them and our son Samuel too. Besides spending precious time with our kids, we both worked daily during our week. Darrell at our airbnb, set up in the living room, and me driving back and forth to the office at Madison Drugs. Just a few more months of this 'practice' in moving, living, and
working in airbnb's.The day was much cooler today with rain often. I gave Darrell a haircut this evening and I'm ready for my night time rest by 9pm!
