Saturday. 6. Our regular morning routine: ddp yoga routine; Darrell makes pancakes and we eat a protein heavy breakfast. Took care of our house sit cat Kesugi. Left for the farmers market in Anchorage about 10am. We went to 2 market locations. It’s still a bit early in the season and the farmer’s markets are very limited. Darrell bought a fresh beignet. I got some local honey. We went to Costco and bought a few items: fresh blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries, a frozen pizza and some Ellenos yogurt to leave some in Tawny’s fridge because we ate all of hers. We have enjoyed eating it as she told us to eat anything in her kitchen. Lol. We came back to the house and baked one of our frozen pizzas for lunch, went for a walk around the block, and took a short nap. Before I napped, I watered the outdoor flowers in pots. I checked the chlorine tablets in the hot tub as had been requested by our hosts. Then as I was coming from the backyard to the front yard, I saw the mama moose with her two larger babies that haven’t been in our yard since Monday. I didn’t expect to see them and came a bit too close for my comfort. I turned my eyes away and walked quickly to the front steps and into the house! Once inside, I could view the trio and get a picture.

Sunday. 7. After church we went out to lunch with a gift card from our house sit hosts.

Monday. 8. Stayed until after lunch with Kesugi and doing chores to clean up at our house sit.

Left about 1pm. Sent Tawny a message as she requested. We went to Anchorage and walked a couple miles one direction on the coastal path. It’s a gorgeous day. We turned around and walked back on the trail and then into town for a coffee and rest. We ended up at Captain Cook Hotel’s coffee shop. After a rest break there, we walked a few blocks to our car and drove on out of town toward Palmer. On the way, we stopped at a State Park with a 1 mile walk back into the woods. The day was beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed the walk to view the waterfall! We got back on the road and drove on to Palmer. We went to the closest Walmart and did our grocery shopping and then went and checked into our VRBO apartment. The sun is shining and we discovered at our apartment that the parking is close to the door. It’s better than the pictures online than we expected! It’s super nice with an amazing view of the mountains beyond the tops of the trees!

My Favorite and Best Friend Forever.

Tuesday. 9. We stayed in all day. Darrell worked on our insurance claim and submitted it to our travel insurance that we had purchased alongside our Celebrity cruise that we were denied boarding on a few weeks ago. I spent much of the day going between short activities for myself. We had a call with Eric, Owen and Esther. We had our regular 10am online Bible class. I talked to my sister Linda. I took a brief walk around our yard.

Wednesday. 10. We’ve been enjoying our apartment with our gorgeous view.  Today we decided on our Denali Park tour in 2 weeks and bought our tickets. This morning I was on the phone with my friend Laura and planned to talk to her again next week when we are in Talkeetna. 7pm is Bible class in Palmer.

Thursday. Got my call in with Laura today.

Friday. Called my sister Annette. Did the West Butte Trail with new friend from church with her 3 kids. We enjoyed talking on our hike and getting to know each other more.

Nomad Notes:

We got an early call from Darrell’s travel insurance claim that it’s denied. The rep said that the technical issues were not all fully met on our side so the policy didn’t cover our claim. Well, we weren’t surprised at this and feel like we were taken by the insurance company. Thankfully we can afford the ‘plan B’ for being denied boarding on the cruise and the ensuing travel decisions we made to get us to Alaska. We did discuss what we have learned about travel insurance and what our ‘risk’ is and how we are going forward with what we know now. What we have learned is that the policy only covers big illness interruptions. We were ill enough to go to a doctor for evals. This was part of the reason we were denied our claim.

I had most of Tuesday where I felt like I was in recovery and not feeling great. I felt much better on Wednesday. I am going to call it an ‘episode’ and consider my symptoms that feel uncomfortable for me, many of which are emotional perceptions, and give myself a rest day and be okay with my needs and my self-care.

Week 5 in Alaska for the summer. My thoughts so far.

Alaska is like a huge developed campground.

Alaska is the obligatory retirement trip for US people.

Quotes I’ve been told by people here about living here.

“You’ve got to love winter to live here.”

“Our family moved here in the 1960s”

“We got married 12 years ago and came here for work as nurses, loved it and stayed.”

“I married a man in Alaska. After 2 years of living in Wasilla year round, I realized that I couldn’t keep it up. I can’t manage through another winter. We began driving our RV to the lower 48 for winter and renting our house. After a few years of that, I didn’t want to stay in Alaska. We sold our house and moved.”
