Saturday. 1. It’s fall in north Alabama. The sweater weather today is clear blue skies and 50-60 degrees. Wake up early around 5-6 am. Do one of our ‘regular’ exercise routines which today is DDP Yoga ‘Stand Up’. Enjoy our ‘regular’, super, amazing breakfast! Darrell’s oat-barley homemade pancakes (reheated) served with Good Cottage Cheese and 0% Greek yogurt, fresh berries, walnuts (some black walnuts for Darrell), maple syrup and pork tenderloin slices. Morning time on our computers and phones. Darrell reads news for a while. I message a couple of friends for meet ups, and have an e-conversation with my daughter-in-law in Brazil. Meet up with friends in Hartselle for lunch. Alton and Diana with Roy and Hilda come from Vinemont to meet us for an early lunch at OH Bryan's steakhouse. This is because of Alton who is very good about inviting and scheduling regular meal time meet ups. After lunch we are going to Kroger for groceries. Darrell has been doing surveys online for a few years, and recently he has cashed in his points for Kroger coupons to the tune of $150! We are burning through this credit quickly! Tonight is daylight savings time and we turn the clocks forward.
Sunday. 2. We went to our ‘regular’ congregation this morning and had a good Bible class and worship time. While there, we were able to say hello to and hug many of our friends who are there. In the evening, a couple from church had a get-together at their house and invited everyone over for dinner and a gospel singing. They served chili and some toppings for dinner. After dinner was finished, about 50 of us gathered into two large rooms in their house and sang hymns for 1 ½ hours. It was lovely and enjoyable to sing and worship together.
Monday. 3. We slept in until 6 am today, did our exercise routine and fixed breakfast. Darrell made pancakes and changed the recipe today. He ordered light buckwheat flour and mixed it with oat flour for his current favorite recipe. The pancakes were delicious and now gluten-free! We took some to Eric, our oldest son who eats gluten-free. We met up with Eric, Owen and Esther at the playground in mid-morning. We stayed and played for 2 hours and also visited with Eric’s inlaws who came too. This evening we are making our pancake breakfast and taking it to a family with a new baby. HAP called Darrell today in response to his application that he sent in on Sunday. The interviewer set him up with a video appointment for Wednesday at 11am.
Tuesday. 4. Regular morning routines. 10am Bible class at the church building that’s about 10 minutes from our airbnb. We studied Acts 18-19 and enjoyed being with several friends from the church who also attend this class. We make plans with Jackie for lunch on Thursday at our place. Today we headed home to eat lunch. At 1pm we have our regular online class with the group in England. Darrell is teaching today out of Luke 9. After class, we take off for Elkmont and a long 5-6 mile walk through the woods. It’s one of our favorite ‘rails to trails’ paths, and today the leaves are showing fall color. The air is slightly cool making the walk very enjoyable. On our way home, we stopped for dinner at 306 BBQ in Athens. Then we went by Samuel’s house and picked up an old desk to haul away for him. In the evening we watch a couple episodes of ‘The Repair Shop’ and ‘Escape to the Country’. Both are on YouTube and are our current BBC picks for relaxing. We had some hot tea and popcorn too. By 8pm I was falling asleep while sitting there so I went to bathe and get ready for bed. I get the clean dishes put away and fall asleep before 9:30.
Wednesday. 5.  Darrell makes fresh pancakes today. He’s using oat and light buckwheat flours. I went to an Athens playground to meet up with Owen and Esther. Darrell stayed home so that he could be ready for his 11am video call interview with HAP. I got home just before noon and he was finished with his call at noon. We fixed lunch together while he was telling me the details he learned on his call. We spent the next 2-3 hours discussing our thoughts back and forth. His complicated eye care and his changing vision, seemingly for the better. And my concern for the length of the committment being 7 months which is longer than our original idea of 4 ½ months. Mainly how this amount of time keeps us from being with our young grandchildren. Two are in Alabama and one is in Brazil, but moving in 2026 and we want some flexibility to visit on their schedules. We decided to table our decision while still thinking and praying about our conflicts and our agreements with possibly going forward with this idea. After dinner we went to Bible class, visited a bit afterwards, came home, had popcorn and watched an episode of Repair Shop.
Thursday. 6. This morning after breakfast, I made Black Walnut Brownies to share with our friend Sondra. We don’t know too many people who know about black walnuts or like them. I called her for a visit tomorrow. We went to a playground with Owen and Esther for an hour. We turned in Samuel’s old desk to a thrift store, went grocery shopping and came home for a 12:30 lunch with friend Jackie. Jackie came with a pot of her homemade clam chowder. We served cheese, crackers and fruit.
Friday. 7. Mid-morning visit with our friend Sondra in Madison. She's a former real estate agent, friend from church where we both attended 2008-2016. Seeing her at Walmart last week and talking about black walnuts led us to this visit. I made black walnut brownies for her and because of her childhood memory story about her aunt making them and how much she enjoyed them. We enjoyed our visit with my brownies and ice cream that she served. Back home, I had an EPT session with a friend by phone. Afterwards Darrell and I had to call the insurance about a medical bill reimbursement issue, then we went out for a walk around our neighborhood.
Nomad Notes:
About our friend Alton Bailey: We met our friend Alton on our online Tuesday Bible class. We joined this e-class in the summer of 2022 after we met with a church near Tonbridge Wells, England. At the class we met several people online from the US who were passing around teaching class along with the English church members. Through class, Alton learned that we came within and hours drive to where he lived in Alabama. He invited us to come to a country church where he was preaching. On a Sunday we drove to meet Alton and his wife. After worship, Alton invited us to go to lunch. While we were at our first meal with Alton and Diana (pronounced Dinah with a southern drawal) Alton told us about his life before he married and their lives and careers since. Significantly he is a Vietnam War Veteran. He had a career in High School education as a coach and then in administration. Through it all he has been a Bible teacher and preacher. In his 50’s he retired from working in schools and went into full time preaching. Currently he’s in his upper 70’s and has had issues with cancer and other ailments that are likely connected to his war time chemical exposures. He’s an excellent Bible student and teacher.
HAP Application for summer work in Alaska: Darrell turned in his application to Holland America and Princess for summer work in Alaska. On our recent cruise we met 4 retired people who did this and told us their experiences in positive ways. So we have been researching and learning about what’s available and how we might do this in the summer of 2026. I’m waiting on applying for any position until there is more information about Darrell’s inquiry. As I finished typing my last sentence, Darrell got a call from HAP, one day after his application submission. The contact lined him up for a ‘Team Chat’ on Wednesday. She also asked him how many hours he was willing to work since he applied for part-time. We will know more on Wednesday.
After Darrell’s interview and our couple of days of discussing this commitment and the number of months involved, we have decided not to do this.
What do you do every day? This is a broad question that I’ve been asked at least 2 times this week. Most days we are not tourists. We have days when we are tourists. We like to go to museums, preferably good ones, but also on a tourism day with rain or cold. If the weather is nice enough we prefer to be outside and walking for a couple of hours. Because we don’t have a regular schedule of housekeeping, maintenance and lawn work (that comes with owning a house), we generally use that resource of time to think, discuss, and plan for what we will do next. We often find some amazing random things or events happening around us. This happened when we were house-sitting in Edinburgh, and it was also the Queen's funeral procession on the Royal Mile. Also when we were house-sitting in Ashville, NC for the storm in the fall of 2024 that turned into a Disaster Zone.
Each day we have a few things that we do and are basic to our day. We get up at the same time, usually between 5:30 and 7am, and we have exercise routines that we do together before breakfast. We cook our breakfast together and we have grown into eating a similar diet and usually the same meal. We often shop together, but for when we aren’t together, we have an online grocery list that we both add to. We each spend time in Bible reading or study, prayer, and time on duolingo (Darrell in Spanish and me in Portuguese for now). Sometimes there is a nap for one or both of us.
Darrell keeps up with our unusual finances through his extensive spreadsheet. I sit beside him for my finance lesson and so that I get more familiar with our organization of what we have. I have to force myself to sit at my computer and do the mundane tasks like cleaning up my email and my contacts.
When we live somewhere for more than one week, I have one day per week to do chores of cleaning the bathrooms and washing towels and sheets.
When we are in Alabama we have family and many friends to socialize with. We also participate in one online Bible class per week with an English church. We attend regular worship on Sundays and a couple of other Bible classes throughout the week.
I spend a few hours each month on the phone with friends, and writing notes to friends.
The two of us spend about 2-3 hours on the phone each week with our grandkids, their parents, and Darrell’s mom.
We each have a blog. Mine is a Nomad Diary while Darrell’s is a Bible questions and teaching mostly with his Kenya connections.
Through the decades we each had hobbies in addition to our work. Darrell’s were around his workshop, house maintenance and remodeling. Mine were around sewing, quilting and cooking. When we downsized, our tools for our hobbies went to someone else. I have continued hobbies with art and also with bodywork. I have done some neurographic art, some watercolor painting and some deep bodywork that moves facia.
As we are in November, I’m thinking about holiday gift-giving.

Saturday. 8. Today ended up being a really busy day. We started our day with a challenging 40 minute ddp workout routine called “Strength Builder” or as Darrell calls it: “The Pretzel Workout.” Owen and Esther came over for the morning. They brought their bike and trike. We walked about 4 blocks to a little neighborhood playground. Jeremy and Quinn called while we were there. Darrell ended up watching the kids climbing on the equipment while I was enthralled with talking to Jeremy and Quinn. We stayed for a little while and walked the 4 blocks back to our house. Darrell carried Esther most of the way and I carried the two bikes! Lol. Owen walked the distance like a champ. After lunch we went to a friend from church to see about helping them load or unload their moving truck. We got to their old house and talked to their son. Our timing was off and we would come back after we went shopping in 1-2 hours. We got back to their house around 2pm. There were about 6 of them working to load a big Uhaul. Darrell and I added our help and spent the next hour and a half loading. This was their 3rd truck for the day and the house was getting almost empty. We weren’t spent so we drove 30 minutes to their new house to help unload the trucks there. We worked constantly with them until about 6pm. We were all quite tired, but happy so much got done. All three trucks were unloaded. They still had more to do, but the bulk of moving items was done. We stopped at our familiar Mexican restaurant in Athens for dinner on our way home.
Sunday. 9. Today we enjoyed our morning at Bible class and worship. We went to lunch with friends. Picked up Darrell’s prescription and did a quick grocery stop. The weather turned colder throughout the day. Called my mother-in-law to talk about her offer yesterday about our wedding photos that have been lost since we downsized. She’s got several pictures from the years of our family. At some point, I may want to scan some of her pictures of us.
Monday. 10. Haircuts today. Visits with Owen and Esther. EPT session on 1 hour phone call. Cooking dinner for new parents. Same meal as last Monday night to a different family. Both have newborn daughters!
Tuesday. 11. Two Bible classes today. 10am at the church building and 1pm online with the church in Kent.
Wednesday. 12. This morning after breakfast we continued our 2026 ‘what are we doing next year’? (discussion below) Today before lunch we went and hung out at a playground with Owen and Esther. I went for a one hour massage today. It was relaxing, as it should be. Ahhh. Tonight is Bible class with our church in Harvest.
Thursday. 13. Playground with Owen, Esther and their cousin Millie. Lunch with Samuel. Loads of discussion and research about a long Alaska trip for the summer of 2026.
Friday. 14. Drive 45 minutes to Fayetteville,Tennessee to meet up with my friend Laura! I got back to the house at 3:30. Darrell had figured out a way to get to Alaska by cruising up, staying 3+ months, and cruising back. So, today we did it! We booked our first cruise date for May 8th from Vancouver to Seward, Alaska. We booked our first ever Celebrity cruise which we’ve been wanting to try. Our next step is to build out the rest of our proposed itinerary with a return to Vancouver from Alaska on a late season September cruise. Our round trip air flights will be to Vancouver, BC.
Nomad Notes.
My emotional grief and conflict came up today over losing the electronic pictures from my past that I scanned and then threw in the trash (some of the pictures I passed on to one of my nieces.) in 2020 while we were downsizing our house. In my emotional conflict thinking, there is a way to calm my grief feelings and accept my loss now. This kind of mental-emotional-physical resolution is what I did for almost 30 years with Emotional Polarity Technique, EPT.
Some of my thoughts about the lost pictures: 1) I have too many. I take too many. 2) I don’t want this many. Pictures from the past generations have been single moments of importance, more costly and have a different value than today's e-media. 3) I want to do less and less e-media but I am in the culture. 4) I enjoy my unique travel opportunities and I enjoy seeing so many beautiful moments, and places that I expect myself to share on facebook or in this blog. 5) My expectations can be downgraded and open up a different experience for me. 6) More isn’t equal to better! 7) There is energy in every action and my current energy needs attention to my pain. Probably pain that I can change with a change in my perspective.
My diet and weight…went up during our recent trip to England and the follow on month-long cruise. We’ve been back to the US and living in an airbnb for 2 -3 weeks. My weight finally is within a pound of where I was before I left. I’m learning to focus on my macros of protein, fiber and good fats. I’m doing well.
My current supplements: While in England, I bought a probiotic halfway through our month on the ship. I was needing some help, and I’m finishing that bottle soon. I didn’t take my methylene blue with me because it’s too difficult to pack in a suitcase and be concerned about the extreme stain and dye getting on anything. I did ok without it. I started a couple drops a day, once I returned. I’m now taking 1 drop per day. I ordered and started taking a supplement last week that’s new to the market and out of Canada. It’s Rejeuve Omega Muff. I got a 3 month supply and it came with a complimentary 2 ounce bottle of ‘muff minerals’. I think these minerals have helped me feel better. I’m not as sore or achy and I’m feeling pretty good since starting these. The omega supplement promises rejuvenating results within 2-6 weeks. These are new formulations from Canada’s Kim Vopni (dare I say, Vagina Coach. She’s known internationally and I recommend her basic video and information that has really helped my bladder.)
2026 Travel Discussions before Friday: We covered our points again and tried to come to terms about which direction to plan our year. We have different perspectives on schedule planning, on our travel tempo, on which direction we will travel, how far we will go, and more. We came to an agreement on a couple of things to get past what I feel is an impasse to getting a plan for the coming year. Our attention is now on the months of June, July and August. (Neither of us want to be in the South for the summer heat. We are ‘tethered’ as it were by Darrell’s regular eye appointments. He does have a couple of options for these treatments in our distant locations. My preference is to return to Alabama within 4 ½ months to visit the 2 grandkids, Owen and Esther, who live here. Since 2022, we have had much longer times away from the US.) We are now considering a road trip to either Newfoundland or Alaska.

Saturday. 15. Lovely morning routines. Lunch with Eric’s family and Samuel. Wes texted that he wasn’t able to make it. A couple games of Uno using regular cards. Long afternoon walk in Athens.

Sunday. 16. Beautiful, enjoyable, uplifting Sunday service. Lunch out at a Mexican restaurant with about 25 people from church.  Afternoon nap ensued on our comfy couch! Dinner and a couple episodes of The Repair Shop found on Youtube.

Monday. 17. Morning routines. We have begun to work an extra hard routine into our weekly rotation. We did the “Below the Belt” ddp routine today as our first thing in the morning agenda. We had what is now our usual breakfast. The day looks clear, sunny and warm. I got the weekly wash of towels and sheets going. Our week has very few items on the agenda. Looking forward to moving on Saturday. Went for a walk in Athens. Met up with the Grandkids, Owen and Esther at an Athens playground. Home for lunch. After lunch, Darrell got online to purchase our September 2026 return cruise from Anchorage, Alaska to Vancouver, BC. It was getting close to 2 o’clock and he had been on the phone with a booking agent way longer than he had planned. We needed to leave to drive 40 minutes to his eye doctor’s office. I drove while he stayed on the phone and completed our booking. We got to downtown Huntsville and to his eye doctor’s office. He was taken right in to test his eye pressure. It was still too high even though he’s been on drops two times a day to help. His doctor isn’t in, but in Russia to try to get his mother to the US. Well, we hope for the best for him in that. Meanwhile, Darrell was sent to another doctor’s office about 5 minutes away. We arrived and he checked in. The office was packed. After about an hour, Darrell was called back. He had his eye pressure tested and then waited a few more minutes to see the doctor who specializes in this problem. The doctor prescribed a second medicine to be added to the current one. And then to come back in one week. Next week is Thanksgiving and we are to be in Arkansas. He concluded to come back in two weeks, but with the doctor’s schedule it will be 2 ½ weeks. He’ll check the pressure again and determine if the medicine is working or if a shunt needs to be put into his eye.

Tuesday. 18. Darrell is teaching the 10 am class for Doug at the church building this week. Doug’s wife has to get a spinal injection for pain. Hopefully this will work out well for her. The regular attendees were there, and it’s nice to be around others and studying together. Darrell discovered today that renting a car in Alaska is about ½ the cost than we were thinking! I’m waiting on renting our Anchorage airbnb that I have selected until Friday the 21st. Hopefully it will still be available in 3 days. We decided to wait on it to force the payment due onto our credit card into the next billing cycle. This gives us a bit more time with payments for future stays. In the evening we watched a couple episodes of The Repair Shop on YouTube. This slow-moving BBC show highlights 3-4 personal stories involving valued objects, usually family treasures. The objects are then restored by master craftspeople and presented back to the owners. This is a feel-good show with warm stories of family love and personal relationships and memories. We enjoy it more and more. I text Eric about visiting the kids on Wed, mid-morning.

Wednesday. 19. Thinking more about check-out on Saturday. Our drive to Hot Springs, Arkansas is about 6 ½ hours. This week I’ve had a couple back and forth texts with Cyndy, Darrell’s sister about our get-together and how we are looking forward to being together. I’m also beginning to get my Christmas list together with shopping and wrapping started. I got up at 5 am today. I did some floor stretches before finding out that Darrell was also up and getting ready for our day. I packed a bag of blueberries and bananas to take on my visit with Owen and Esther. I want to see how that is received today! Lol. I have to think about how little they are at 2 and 4 years old. It is such a sweet, sweet time with them and it makes my heart so happy to be with them! I got to their house about 9:30am. They loved having a surprise bag of goodies! Esther ate ½ pint of blueberries with me through the morning. We played for an hour and a half together. We built magnetic square towers. We read books and played ‘ride a little pony’. I also had them draw on paper for a homebound friend of mine’s birthday card. Owen folded the papers up that looked more like a wad. I left it as he did it. When I arrived back home, Darrell had spent the morning on the phone. On one call to Avis, he got the best price he had seen on renting a Rav4 next summer in Anchorage, Alaska. On another call, he got back with our agent on our recent Princess cruise booking and took a half hour or more to correct two errors on the contract that she had sent a day earlier. After lunch I went to Dollar Tree on a Christmas shopping spree. I got cards, cookie mixes, wrapping paper, some cheap toys, gum, and cute items all to make small gifts to go with a cash gift for the holiday. Tomorrow I plan to do some more shopping at Hobby Lobby, Piper and Leaf, and maybe Sprouts. That should be it for my shopping. The next step is wrapping everything, writing checks and delivering the gifts before we leave for Brazil on December 9th. Some gifts will get packed to go to Brazil.

Thursday. 20. Darrell’s going to lunch with Gordo, a retired work colleague. I got side-tracked from my plan to go shopping because my body got triggered emotionally and physically. My knees got weak, I cried a lot. I needed to focus on my prayers and thoughts and resting at home.

Friday. 21. Today we both woke up early after sleeping well. We had a challenging morning workout. For breakfast we finished off the last of the pancakes Darrell had made ahead. We weigh our portions and today our pancake portions were a bit smaller than our usual portions. We both decided that the smaller portion of pancakes worked, and we noted our new smaller portion size for the next time we weighed out pancakes. After breakfast, I got online and booked our Anchorage, Alaska airbnb for our first month and our last month during the summer of 2026. I’m really happy that we got the condo that we chose after much looking for the past week. I began to organize packing crates and boxes, unloading our kitchen items, and separating items that we won’t need on this trip and we can store at Samuel’s house. We went to visit Eric, Owen and Esther for a while. We took a walk, played and watched cartoons together. We came home for lunch, and spent the rest of the afternoon resting, doing computer work and organizing for our drive to Hot Springs, Arkansas tomorrow.

Nomad Notes. This week we have made purchases for our plan to spend 4 months in Alaska next summer. We have looked at how to get to Alaska, what to do when we get there, and how long to stay. We decided to fly to Vancouver, BC and get on a 7 day, one-way cruise to Anchorage. That will be on a Celebrity ship, our first time on this line, beginning May 8th. We will return to Vancouver on a Princess ship, beginning in Whittier, Alaska on September 2nd. Now that we have these two cruises booked, our next detail is to secure our rental car for our stay. We are looking at airbnb’s for staying in Anchorage and Fairbanks. I have a friend from childhood, who has offered us a complementary stay in her Fairbanks cabin, and we are waiting on her to give us dates that it will be available for us. Besides living in these two cities for at least 4 weeks each, we want to spend a week as tourists near Denali. We also have other locations on our tourist list like Talkeetna, Valdez, Seward, and a couple of other places. We are looking forward to our 2026 travels to Alaska. In addition to this, we booked an airbnb here in Alabama for a month when we return from Brazil on January 6th. Once we get into February we hope to go visit Darrell’s brother Glenn in Tennessee. After that we aren’t sure about the exact date, but our son Jeremy and his family are supposed to be in D.C. between their State Department assignments. We expect to drive up to D.C. and visit with them for at least a couple of weeks. We have several weeks from Feb-early May to see how it will get filled in with our nomad living!

My physical and emotional discomfort: Can come as anxiousness. It can come as body pain or lack of attention. I use deep bodywork and prayer often to bring me back into more relaxation, and into greater tolerance for myself and for others.  I hesitate to write about this, but it is a big part of my life. I have gotten so much better in my living, through my decades of addressing physical and emotional discomforts within myself and even helping others do the same. It is still difficult to face the hurts and the limits of ourselves. As difficult as facing hurts, it’s also difficult to open to love and compassion and connection with ease and joy. In those times of ease and joy, I’m grateful. I seek gratitude and thankfulness in every situation– whether in connection or in disconnection of what I can feel.

I felt sleepy and did about 20 minutes of deep facia work (Block Therapy), and felt much better. I was revived, awake and relaxed. I was ready to take a walk.

I went for a walk around the neighborhood with Darrell and felt better.

On Thursday I had a meltdown that left me home resting, reflecting and praying. I will be with my emotional hurts and my physical hurts and how they are playing together within me. I will be kind to myself even when I am limited. I will be grateful for my peaceful place to rest. My peaceful relationship with my husband. My larger family and friends who are able to help me if I am needing something more. For now, I will move slower, use self-care in all the ways I know with gratitude and prayer. I encourage my readers to also use self-care and attention to spiritual growth in every situation.

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
