Saturday. 21. Today is a scenic touring day on the ship. We went to Endicott Arm and saw the glacier at the end of it from 4 miles away!! We didn’t get as close as we have been to glaciers on other cruises, but the captain did the best he could that day. Along the way there were beautiful mountains, and floating chunks of ice with some sunning seals. We had all three meals in the dining room with Bob and Sarah. This ship is packed with people and most are first time cruisers. In this situation the buffet is also packed with people and not as enjoyable as going to the dining room and being served quietly while spending time visiting.
Sunday. 22. Church in Ketchikan at 10:30am. Lunch at a food truck at the pier next to the ship.
Monday. 23. Sea day.

Cool Architecture in Burlington, WA |
Tuesday. 24. Last breakfast on ship. Walk off by 8:30. Walk a couple blocks to our parking garage and find our truck. Load up. Darrell had left our truck fridge (the size of an Ice-free cooler) at 68 degrees F. The battery was full when we left our truck a week ago. Now the cooler was still 68 degrees and had a couple hours of charge left! We were impressed! Drive through Vancouver traffic toward the US border and Hwy 5 south. Sat in line at the border for maybe 20 mins. Had coffee in Blaine, WA. Drove on to lunch in Lynden, WA and then to Racehorse Falls. We walked through the woods to find the falls. It was a challenge going down to view the falls. They were totally worth the walk in the quiet woods. We hiked back up the steep slope and through the woods to our car. Darrell completed the drive to our Burlington, WA airbnb, arriving by 3pm. We moved into the quiet and beautiful space. We rested a bit before heading out for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. We had leftovers that we put into a take out box and brought back to our small airbnb refrigerator. After dinner, we drove a couple of blocks to the grocery to get breakfast items. We bought a handful of items to get us through breakfast: boiled eggs, greek yogurt, strawberries, Dave’s seeded bread. We could use our small airbnb fridge until we packed up our small fridge inside our truck.

Wednesday. 25. We slept great! Comfy bed with extreme quiet in this place. We woke up around 5-6am very well rested. We unrolled our yoga mats and did our recorded DDP ab routine, one of our tougher weekly routines! It felt great because while we were on the ship we were doing our 23 minute ‘energy’ routine. We were able to fix a nice breakfast with dark coffee. We checked out by 9am and headed to Seattle for Darrell’s 1:30 eye doctor appointment. We arrived at the parking garage and office complex by 10:30am. The parking garage was tight and a challenge to drive into and through to find our spot on the 4th deck. We marked our spot with google maps and went to find the doctor’s office. It took us a couple of tries to locate the office, but then we arrived at the 6th floor very near to our parking lot– luckily! Lol. We were able to use the restrooms and then leave the building in search of lunch. We sat in the lobby and determined where we would walk to for lunch. We went to a mediterranean place that was a couple blocks walk. It was nice weather and we easily walked in the city with pedestrian crosswalks and traffic lights to cross streets. Our lunch was filling and satisfying. We went for a walk around a college campus with beautiful trees and gardens, then we went back to the doctor's office by 1pm. Darrell was the first afternoon patient to check into the que. They called him back before 1:30 and had him finished before 2:30! We were back to our car and I was driving the 2 ½ hours to Sequim, WA. Our house sit in Sequim (pronounced: squim) is hosted by Linda. She was expecting us by 8pm. We arrived in town, stopped for dinner and then found her house by 6-7pm. We weren’t sure about her house number, but we got that sorted out and met Linda at her front door. We entered and began visiting and asking questions to get to know each other and our current moving-in needs. Once we got our things unloaded and Linda showed us to our suite, we discussed the evening work with her 13 rescue birds and 2 cats. We got an introduction to the bird wet room, the birds in cages, their names, ages and histories. There was a lot of information and specialty feeding tasks. Linda was going through her caretaking with years of skill and knowledge that she shared to us as succinctly as possible. We were able to complete watching her put the birds to bed and introduce us to the two cats in their own suite and put them to bed as well. We retired to our suite in her large house and we slept well with our morning alarm set for 5:30 am!

Linda Beside Her Raspberries Thursday. 26. Today we followed Linda around through the day as she took care of her animals. We learned how to give medicine to her oldest bird, Henri, 28 years old and due to be entered into the Guiness Book of world records for his type. We learned about feeding each bird with the bowls of food and water distributed correctly. We made fresh food. Well, Linda did because I will be doing it in the coming week. Linda gave a wash to her aviary with a hose. She also took us into the wing of the house that her 2 cats live in and showed us all the care with Mya and Kali. We spent time outside in Linda’s garden. There are ripe raspberries that are loaded and she hasn’t had time to pick them. She has loads of jam she’s made and we will be enjoying some of it in the coming week. There are also fresh currants and cherries that I will pick some of too. A huge rose garden with heady fragrances everywhere is amazing too! By dinner time, she was tired doing all of her chores and getting packed for her trip. She took us all out for a very nice dinner. We ate well, slept well and tomorrow we are on our own here! Friday. 27. After getting through morning chores for the birds and the cats, we had breakfast between 8 and 9am. It’s a totally different schedule for us to put exercise in the afternoon. This day is a bit tougher as there were more chores after breakfast to get moved in, do some cooking for ourselves, do our laundry and make two days worth of fresh bird food. We did get all this accomplished and probably more, but I was feeling some stress with all the newness of the situation and getting adjusted. About 10:30 I told Darrell that we are going out for coffee. I found a place and we drove there. Turns out that the place I picked was full up, and we easily walked to another shop close by. We ended up ordering lunch sandwiches there with our drinks. We brought our computers because Darrell wasn’t getting a good signal at the house and that increased the stress of the new situation. While we were at the coffee lunch shop, we met Anne and John. They had moved here to a retirement home a couple years ago. They told us what they loved about the area including the very friendly people, the sunshine, and some of their favorite lunch places. Nomad Notes. |
