Saturday. 14. Morning routine of DDP yoga together, then breakfast. We are eating our food that we have pared down to our essentials. Breakfast is always a favorite meal of mine especially with bright flavors and dark roast coffee! Jeremy and Quinn (grandson age 4yrs 9mos) called from Brazil around 7:30 am in our time zone. My smile is always brighter after talking to a grandchild! This week Quinn helped his Mom sell chocolate at the Embassy. He also began to learn to read music in his piano class, which his Mom says he’s surprisingly good at. Darrell is working on his two lessons for church tomorrow. I go out for a mid-morning walk. I returned about 10:30 and Darrell was ready to get outside. We take off walking toward town on the horizontal top of the White Rock hill. Soon we are going down the very steep incline to the coastline. Once we are at the beachfront, we continue walking to the right along the sidewalk while looking at all the shops. There are loads of ice cream shops! We go about 3 blocks and the turn to head back up the hill by way of a street we haven’t been on yet. It looks like 3 blocks straight up, but then we climb those and look up another 3 blocks! We finally get to one of the top of the hill streets. Darrell wants to go through a path into a park about a block to our left. We go and find the pathway, but it goes down into the woods. It’s a nice wooden staircase going down steeply into the park area. We get to a bottom point and go right following a pathway back up steeply with more wooden steps! Once we get to the top, we find the sport fields and community center we were looking for. This is where we are meeting for church tomorrow. Then we start walking back towards our house avoiding going down another steep hill! Lol. It’s probably a 30-40 minute walk from here, but we take a couple of detours. We stop at an atm for cash and then we look at restaurants until we decide to stop at an Indian one for lunch. It was really good! I had a regional dish that was new to me. It’s also one of the best dishes I have ever had so I want to remember that it’s called Malai Chicken Tikka. We walked back to our house, and soon went for an afternoon nap.

Sunday. 15. Time in worship with others at the White Rock church of Christ. We decided to walk about 30 minutes to the community center where the church of Christ meets. We left early enough to stop and enjoy a cappuccino at a Belgian cafe. We arrived around 9:45 and met Loren and Lorraine, a son and his 96 year old mother (she made a point to tell her age, and she’s in great shape!). They drove about 30-40 minutes up from Washington state. They said that they often come up here to worship. They also attend church at Bellingham, Washington and at Mt. Baker church, depending on which direction they want to drive. Arriving next were the rest of the members. It was great to reintroduce ourselves to Roy and his daughter Nicole from Chile about 2-3 years ago, and Winston, Nida, Abby and Mica from the Philippines over 15 years ago. During the Bible class time, Darrell presented a lesson with slides that he made to illustrate our relationship with God: the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. He read passages with the word spirit where the translators capitalize the word to (rightly or wrongly) indicate “Holy Spirit”. He easily showed in his presentation that the word ‘Spirit’ cannot mean ‘Holy Spirit’. Then he showed in his diagrams what and who the word spirit is describing. He used verses in John 14 and 15 and Romans 8 among others. There was a lot of interest and participation which makes for a more enjoyable class. After our morning worship and visiting for a few minutes, we walked back toward our place. We stopped for lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant that had a Father’s Day special. We ordered a special platter for two and enjoyed our lunch at their outdoor patio. We walked home afterward. Later in the day we took a long walk down the steep hill to White Rock Beach Promenade. This is a sunny Sunday and there were a lot of people at the beach. Many were keeping the fish and chip shops busy as it is the thing many people, with ties to England, do at the seaside: eat fish and chips and also have ice cream. It doesn’t matter how cold it is at the seaside, there will be an ice cream shop selling for this experience.
Monday. 16. Get our Alaska cruise packing sorted and ready for tomorrow. We both woke up at 5am and had slept well enough to get up for the day. We did our morning routine: exercised and had breakfast. Around mid-morning we went out for a walk and to a coffee shop. We arrived at one near to our place that had a constant stream of customers. Darrell’s organizing some of our truck packing and ultimately his packing for our weeklong cruise starting tomorrow.

Nomad Notes. This week we have two reunions planned. On Sunday we revisited the White Rock church of Christ since first meeting the people here in September 2023. Our second reunion is with friends Bob and Sarah on our Alaska cruise. They are coming from North Carolina. They were on our first cruise with us back when Sarah and I were both massage therapists. She and I planned a cruise where we could get CE’s while on the ship. It’s been years since we sailed together in the Caribbean, and this is the first post-pandemic cruise for them. Sarah and I are looking forward to lots of visiting and catching up.
Our Alaska cruise was oversold. We got a notification requesting people voluntarily give up their ticket with perks of course. We didn’t give up our tickets. A couple days after that notice, we got an upgrade offer for our room. We purchased an inside cabin and saw that our room assignment is a balcony. We went ahead and bid on a larger room because it seemed like a fun option for us!
We watched some evening shows by accessing what we wanted to see on YouTube. We watched a few shows including: Dry Bar Comedy, Money for Nothing, a Peroit episode, and a Sherlock Holmes episode. While watching Money for Nothing, a BBC upcycle show that saves items from the dumpster, makes something nice of them and sells for a profit, I feel like I’ve done this upcycling all my life in similar (less professional) ways to this show. It gets me thinking about Darrell’s skill in upcycling old furniture through our years together. We both enjoy the creative part of coming up with a plan for improving an item, and making it useful and hopefully much prettier. At times during our nomad living, this week it happened, I think about settling down. I think about crafts like this to occupy my time and even Darrell’s time in ways we have enjoyed in our past. I looked up some real estate offerings in a couple of towns to see the current costs, and if anything appealed to me now. It was interesting, but I wasn’t pulled away from our current nomad focus of short term, furnished living arrangements.
