Saturday. 30. Our foodie tour day in Buenos Aires. We enjoyed our morning routine and left the $10 USD to go to our foodie meeting place in San Telmos. We enjoy our taxi ride through the city. We arrive a full hour early and take a long walk around this old neighborhood. We tried to get cash at an ATM, but we failed. By 11:30 we have walked back to our meeting point. Our tour guide Lu sees us and takes us to our table to wait for the others. She eventually gets all 9 of us plus herself together. We are all English speaking and she explains the city and our tour expectations. We walk down the street toward the Mercado. There’s a lot of black and white soccer shirts and we learn that the playoffs are two Brazilian teams with the same colors! The fans are having meals before going to the afternoon game. We are escorted to our first of two restaurants within the mercado. Here at “Grandma’s” we are served family recipes for an appetizer and a chard fritter with aioli. Both courses are delicious. We move on to the empanada course. This is a full sized sandwich filled with beef and vegetables. There is hot sauce alongside and both Darrell and I enjoyed adding hot sauce. The empanada was delicious. We remembered having some in Barcelona and we didn’t like them as well as these. We were full enough and didn’t realize that we were going to have another full meal with a lemonade at our next stop. We had fresh baked bread with a white bean appetizer. Next came Baked Provolone topped with eggplant, tomato and basil. Then they brought out oven baked pans of pork and vegetable stew. Everything was hot from the oven and delicious! Once we all were so full it was now time to go for Gelato. Thankfully we walked a good bit, toured an old mansion turned into a vintage shopping area with shops and cafes inside. We came to the gelato place and selected two flavors. I got fig and banana split. Darrell got chocolate almond and dulce le leche. We enjoyed our ice cream. We decided to walk the couple of miles or more back to our ship. We saw some sights, old buildings and walked with many other people next to the river and saw the women’s bridge. We walked by the Navy buildings and housing just next to the cruiseport. We did see some homeless or street people here and there.

Sunday. 1. 2nd day of 3 in port at Buenos Aires. It’s raining hard outside with a forecast for the whole day of rain. We slept in until about 6am. We changed cabins today. This is something that we have never done until now. Our cruise is 35 days and we are at the mid-point. It is 2 cruises back to back. There are cruisers getting off and getting on in this city. We are called ‘guests in transit’. We bid for an upgraded room. For us we are going to a mini-suite with a pull out couch, two tvs, a larger deck and a larger bathroom with a tub! The crew will move our things to our new cabin. We are required to pack our things into suitcases and whatever is on hangers is fine too. We leave our cabin by 8:30am and then we can come back to our new cabin sometime after lunch. With the rain and our cabin moving, we are hanging out on the ship. Later in the afternoon we will worship together in our room and online with our Alabama church family.
Monday. 2. Day 3 in port at Buenos Aires. Today we did our morning routines of exercise, coffee and then breakfast in the dining room. We decided to walk from the port into the city to the ‘City of the Dead’. It is a ticketed graveyard that is about 4 city blocks in size. The wealthy people are buried here in side by side mausoleums. The weather is sunny and clear. We ride the shuttle bus through the shipping containers area to the cruise passenger terminal. We continue out past the taxi drivers and tour sellers. I have my ID, cash and a credit card in a pouch inside my bra. I have my phone tucked into my back pants pocket. It is on a long cord around my neck and one shoulder. For jewelry I have simple earrings. We walk a couple of miles following a map. We get past the bus station and the train station. We cross a couple of highways using a footbridge and also pedestrian crossing lights. There are many people out walking and going to work or traveling. We get into a neighborhood called Recoleta. There are 100+ year old mansions that have been refurbished into fancy hotels and apartments. We walk to a park with huge old trees. We see dog walkers with 10 dogs on leashes as they become the pack leader. We walk through grassy parks with monuments and over a bridge crossing another large highway. We see the art museum with huge columns looking like a Greek temple. Beyond the art museum is the famous steel flower. We walk to it. We enjoy being in this park and get a few pictures. We continued on our long round about walk heading back towards the famous cemetery. On our way we see a mall and enter it to find a toilet. After our stop there we come out on the other side of the mall and walk one more block to the cemetery. We buy tickets and go in. For the next hour or more we walk around this unusual place. It’s laid out like houses with small streets. The houses are mausoleums built close side by side. There are all different styles of architecture and building materials. Evita Perone is buried here and has a line of people going to her tomb and posing for pictures there. Once we walked around and through and down and back, we took the only way out…walking through the exit. Lol. We thought we would stop to have lunch, but it was still before noon. We walked back to the ship by 12:30. Friends on the ship told us that they tried to walk to the Japanese Gardens and got turned around and ended up in the slums. It took them a while to get through and back out again. They had a different kind of walk than they expected.

Tuesday. 3. Sea Day. AM Bible class in Mark 6 with 16 attending. Darrell stays in the cabin because he’s feeling tired and a bit like he has a cold. I’m there mostly too. I do some stretches since we have plenty of room to work out in our room except for the short ceiling. We dial into our 4pm online Bible class with our US and English friends. We are in Ruth 3. We go to the buffet for dinner which we rarely do. There were two presentations today about Antarctica. They were recorded and I kept checking to see if they were uploaded to our tv, but they weren’t and I had a bit of disappointment. I’ll have to wait! lol.
Wednesday. 4. AM Bible Class. Darrell and I go to the Captain’s 9:30 lecture that is simulcast in two areas. We get comfortable seats and enjoy his explanation of our voyage. It’s quite interesting and enjoyable. He shows us beautiful pictures with penguins, whales and walrus’. Also a lot of snow and ice. He explains the difficulty of traversing this part of the world. He explains how desolate this place is and how few people ever come here. All amazing! Darrell and I work out before dinner today since we are on our second day to miss our morning workout. I bought a stuffed penguin at the gift shop onboard for Quinn our 4 year old grandson. We have also signed up for our Friday excursion in Punta Arenas, a difficult hike. For Saturday I’m hoping for the catamaran tour on a river with animal viewing ‘at the end of the world’ Ushuaia. Sometimes these tours are already sold out so that may happen before we get tickets. If so, then we will enjoy a walk around the port area or purchase a taxi off the ship. Tonight is dinner in the restaurant and the show is a singer from Las Vegas.
Thursday. 5. Sea Day.

Friday. 6. Port day at Punta Arenas, Chile. Today we went on ship tour to Bulnes Fort and a mountain top walk through the woods with a view of the waterway and coast. It was beautiful! We had sunshine with cold windy weather. The walk had some steep up and downs, but went quickly. I enjoyed being on the ground and hearing the birds in the forest. At the end of our walk we arrived at a mountaintop cafe and gift shop. Our group was served drinks and empanadas as a quick bite. Our friends Mike and Marta were also on this tour. When we arrived back to the town and the port Darrell and I decided to take a walk through town. Then we boarded the small shuttle boat taking us back to the ship in the bay.
Nomad Notes. Everyday I think about people I love my family and friends. I pray for my family, especially my grandchildren. We have 3 littles under 4 years old. I’m so thankful for their good parents. I’m grateful that they are loved and cared for with good homes. How this makes my heart so happy. I think of my own children who are all in their 30’s and my daughter-in-laws. I pray for each one with gratitude to God. I think of my friends and my original family members along with Darrell’s family and parents. I also think and pray for sick and injured. How my heart wants blessings for healing and growth with love from God.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.” James 1: 17-18
