Saturday. 31. Lunch in Hartselle with friends. Alton and Diana and Roy and Hilda (87!). We met Alton at an online Bible class with our English friends. The church we attended in Kent, England has connections to Alton, Sewall Hall and others. Each time we come to Alabama, Alton asks us out for lunch. We have enjoyed their friendship over the last couple of years and look forward to meeting them each time. We have met their friends Roy and Hilda at a couple of different congregations where we’ve visited Alton in Vinemont and at Beulah.

Sunday. 1. Lunch with friends Jim and Jackie. Jim has traveled the world with his work. Jackie keeps the home fires burning. lol. Jim’s recent job change keeps him at home more than on the road now. They are looking to do a train trip to the northeast and see the fall colors. I look forward to their trip and how they like it as we have never done a train trip yet.

Monday. 2. It’s Labor Day, a national holiday. We invited our 3 sons and family over for a 5pm BBQ at our little farmhouse. The weather was beautiful and sitting outside was lovely. Samuel, our youngest son, volunteered and brought a dessert! That was so nice! He was laughing about the cookbook that he got the date bar recipe out of and how funny the commentary was in the book. I told him to bring the book and entertain us, and he did! We all laughed at the descriptions of the author who liked most of his printed recipes but had some recipes that he said were horrible! Darrell grilled out chicken and made potato salad. I put all the other items for our meal together: gluten free, sheep cheese biscuits with hot peppers and bacon, salad, fruit plate and roasted broccoli, carrots, turnips, leeks and garlic cloves. Our airbnb hosts have two ponies and a donkey named Jack. She gave me some carrots to let Owen feed the animals. It was so much fun for us!

Tuesday. 3. This morning was our weekly ab routine for our morning workout. Years ago when we began this daily workout, I was so contrary but determined to do it. Now I enjoy it! I’m so glad that I’ve kept it up and I’m really happy that Darrell does it to and has even pushed me to do more and to keep doing it. I went to visit Esther and Owen at 9am. Around 10:15 Eric put Esther down for a nap and Owen came and sat beside me on the couch. This is a first time and it felt so good. He loves grandpa and often avoids me. I’ve made an effort to always tell him hello and goodbye, use his name and give him a hug. I tell him I love him when I have to give him a boundary or discipline him. Today when it was time for me to leave around 10:40, he said, ‘I love you.’ Awe, that felt great! I got to say, “I love you, and you gave me a good smile today!”

Wednesday. 4.

Thursday. 5. Arrive 7:15 to babysit Owen and Esther. They wake up between 7:30 and 8am. Eric is going out of town today through Monday, and then has a doctor visit on Tuesday. We’ve agreed to babysit for 4 days while Erin is working. Eric gives Darrell a list of to-do’s. Darrell got through Eric’s short to-do list. He then decided to learn about how to build a new fence gate. The current ones don’t work well because they are heavy, dragging the ground and difficult. Darrell looked up how to build better and lighter ones. He went and got the wood and got started.

Friday. 6. Babysit 7:15-3pm. Darrell had a regular doctor appointment today. I was glad that he came back in time to put Owen down for his nap. He’s Owen’s favorite and I had two naps to manage with Esther.

Nomad Notes. I like the quietness of where our airbnb is. Babysitting is tiring but very rewarding. The weather is expected to cool off for a few days. I’m practicing some watercolor painting in very small doses. I’m sleeping better on nights that I eat a small protein and fat snack about an hour before I go to sleep (avocado+walnuts for example). During the day I still have to work on my sleep apnea breathing exercises. It’s not great, but it’s improved.
