A question from friends: What do you do?
This Nomad Diary is all about what we do, where we’ve been and where we are going. Our current way of living is very different from having a fixed house to live in. Since we are retired, our daily and yearly schedule is ours to make up as we go. We know that our plans can be interrupted by higher priorities and needs at any time.
This month has been a wonderful time of hours spent with our grands Owen and Esther. These two little ones are usually quite happy to be playing inside or outside. Sometimes Darrell and I babysit together and sometimes separately; sometimes for a few hours and at times an hour here or there.
We’ve had many opportunities to visit with friends for a coffee or a lunch meal. We were able to help a small group from church move a couple into an assisted living facility.
I took a long weekend road trip with my friend Laura to my sister Annette’s retreat called Lifeworks in Santa Rosa Beach. I’ve gone to Lifeworks many times through the years. This one was special to be with my two sisters and brother-in-law also. We were last together a year ago! My longtime friend Laura drove down from Tennessee and picked me up on the way to Florida. We had hours together on our drive down and back. I was a bit sick, but seemed well enough. When I got back to Alabama the next week, I had a regular doctor visit and I was running a low-grade fever! Oops! I also needed some medicine for a bladder issue. So I got two prescriptions which is a different way of operating for me. I’m glad I did. I felt better during and after the medicines of 5 days.
We’ve had our truck worked on at the Honda dealer and it went from a 2 hour job to 5 hours with some complications. They got the job done thankfully and we were tired!
We’ve been to church and Bible classes between two congregations where we know a lot of people. There are many people who are new to us. I love meeting people and getting a bit of their life story or what’s going on with them. I practice remembering people. I met a couple, Malcolm and Barbara, ages 90 and 92 at a Sunday evening service where our son Eric attends. They were married about 9 years and full of information and interesting life circumstances. They were also feeble. They were living separately with respective children caring for them. I heard later in the week that Barbara passed away on Thursday after I met her.
We got our absentee ballots for the South Dakota Primary. I looked up the candidates online and made my choices. We will be mailing the envelopes in the next few days.
Nomad Notes:
I’ve been going through all of my clothing. I have a trunk that fits into the truck with my off-season clothes and other personal keepsakes. My current clothing is summer wear. I’m trying to figure out what to pack for Brazil and get my trunk packed for storage.
I’m also going through each of our 8 stacking storage crates. Each crate is labeled for a topic: office, bathroom, travel, etc. And also 2 more trunks that contain larger household items like our bathroom scale, iron and Instapot.
I took a few donation items to a local thrift store. I am looking for more items that I/we don’t use.
For the next trip to Brazil on June 11th, it really comes down to packing what I need within a suitcase and carry-on that will be accepted on an airplane.
I’m thinking about that trip. I’ve made a packing list on our shopping list app.
