#92 August 6, 2022 Nomad Diary. Bitton AirBnB. Bath and Bristol. My Fall and Ambulance Treatment.

Path from Kelston Bus Stop to Bath Soft Cheese Cafe

Saturday Activities. 6. We took the bus from a stop right in front of our airbnb towards Bath, and got off at a close village called Kelston. We walked away from the main road down a country lane to a cafe located at a cow farm called Bath Soft Cheese Cafe. We ate second breakfast here. It was delicious with great cappuccinos! We walked on down the pasture to the bike path that is on an old railroad bed and runs between Bristol and Bath. We walked into Bath at least 6 miles. We walked around there, got myself a walking stick, had a light lunch, and picked up some groceries before heading back on our 20 minute bus ride to Bitton.

Week's Highlights.

Friday. 5. I feel good enough to take a mile walk to get on a local bus to Bristol. We get to the waterfront and take a long walk along there, circle back around and go to lunch where we ordered a seafood pizza. It was tasty but also funny to us that it came with the mussel shells on it!

Mixed seafood pizza with shells!

Then we went to the Bristol History and Art museum and looked and enjoyed for a couple of hours before going back to the bus, riding back to the bus stop just beyond our town and walking about a mile back to Bitton and cooking dinner in our airbnb.

Thursday. 4. I stayed home this day. I brought a soft tissue sound treatment machine with me and a tool that I can adjust my skull and other skeletal bones with so I used my tools to keep adjusting and treating my injury. It was so helpful and felt like I was able to rest and recover quite well. Darrell did all the domestic stuff today. We usually cook breakfast together and I do most of the laundry, but I stayed sitting or laying down today.

Thursday morning Darrell is taking care of me with pancakes again. I have a big bruise.

Wednesday. 3. We ride the local but into Bath and go to the Roman Bath museum. It’s the tourist thing to do and we loved it with hundreds of other people moving through the large self-guided tour.

Just outside the back wall of the Roman Museum in Bath. Love the layers of architecture here.

Inside the Roman Spa. Detail of under floor heating system made by stacked tiles to create space under the floor where hot air is pushed from a furnace.

We walk around the town, have a pricey Italian lunch which is delicious! We went back to the Royal Crescent and go through a museum there that shows a house there set in 1775. This museum was really nice too.

Street view in Bath. I love this town!!

In the primary bedroom was the styled wig men wore in the 1700s.

We walk back down the hill through Bath towards the bus station to get our bus back to Bitton. It’s about 4:30 in the afternoon, and I trip and fall. I slammed my left skull into a solid flat sided column. I feel the impact and how bad this could be. I immediately put pressure to my injury and sit on a step with my arms resting on my legs and bent over with my head close to my knees. Darrell talks to me and then a passerby helps him and waits to see that he gets a call through for an ambulance. The operator wasn’t sure if an ambulance could come, but they come right over to where we are, and help me inside the vehicle within about 20 minutes. There are two EMTs named James and John. (Apostles,  I tell them!) who ask me who Darrell is, and then let him into the ambulance treatment room too. We are there for about 30 minutes while they check me out, clean my wound and super-glue it closed, check my cranial nerve function, and give me an EKG to check my heart. They take our personal info and I ask how do we pay. They say there is no charge. It’s an accident and healthcare is free here. They give me advice for my onward care and we are set back out where they had found us. We go on over to the bus station and get our 20 minute bus back to Bitton.

Tuesday. 2. On this day, Darrell made us pancakes from his grocery store haul last night. I stay at the airbnb to rest and to do laundry. We have a washer and dryer combo appliance in a cabinet over the bathroom sink. I use a chair to stand on to reach putting the soap into the tray. Since using this smaller machine in the UK, and being supplied laundry soap pods, I have gotten into a routine of putting a pod into a small dish and cutting it open. Once I have the liquid soap in my dish, then I can spoon in a smaller amount of soap. I usually use one pod for 2-3 wash loads.

View of this hill from our closest bus stop. This hilltop can be seen for miles in many directions.

Darrell went to grocery shop and discover what our options and walks from here and bus rides are going to be. He spent a lot of time looking at our bus routes and how to pay for the local buses. We even had a discussion with our airbnb hosts about the buses, the local restaurants and how to get from our little and awkwardly placed town of Bitton. Once we got through these details, then we knew how we could get between the cities of Bath and Bristol and all the little places in between too. We did a lot of walking and really enjoyed this country town.

Monday. 1. From our Swindon BnB we walk with our luggage and backpacks to the train station and head for Bath. Once we arrive in Bath, we leave our luggage at a storage place which in this case is a barber shop just across the street from the train station. We begin exploring Bath on foot. It is cleaner and quieter than London. The air is fresher. It is a tourist destination and a college town. The architecture and town plan was layed out in the 1700s. There are plaques on many of the townhomes indicating the reknown person who lived or stayed there. I see Admiral Nelson from the battle of Trafalgar. I also see Jane Austen who we also saw a plaque for in Southampton. Well she has gotten around and I have read some of her books! We see the Circus, a circular neighborhood of townhomes, and then we walk on to the Royal Crescent.

In Bath.

The Royal Crescent

It's shape and building is all about Bath! We love it! We find our local bus to take us to our town of Bitton where we move into our airbnb for the next two plus weeks. Darrell walked to the convenience store about a block away and discovered that there wasn’t much there. He then walked on another 2 miles through pastures to the next town, Keynsham where there was a grocery store. He loaded up several items and walked the 2 miles back.

Sunday. 31. Today I feel surprisingly pretty good after my worst symptom day of covid yesterday. I have my mask ready to wear in public areas so that I don't infect others and also if I start sneezing or coughing as I have a little congestion. We get all packed up, do each necessary final item for leaving our house sit, and we are out and traveling by 9am. We ride the train to Swindon where we have reservations for a BnB for one night. We walk from the train station to our stay and get checked in early by the owner Sarah.

On the London underground with our suitcases headed for Swindon.

Walking through Swindon about a mile to find our BnB.

A nice street in Swindon.

A very nice room and private bathroom for the night.

Then we take off to find a late lunch. We google to find a restaurant and walk to Menu Brasil to find it really good. We end up going there for dinner too. The night at Sarah's BnB is comfortable and quiet in a neighborhood of houses. She has built here hotel business over the last few years and almost got wiped out during the pandemic before agreeing to take on a government contract for people to stay at her place for several months. Then she was so tired of that, she went back to advertising for tourists again. She made our breakfasts to order in her sunny breakfast room. We sat and talked for about an hour about politics which she loves to here from Americans about because she is a Trump fan. She's animated and knows so much from her attention to what is said on the news versus what is real in her business and those she talks to. It was fun to get to know her and enjoy her BnB on our way to Bitton.

Nomad Notes.
It is this week that challenged us with moving as I was recovering from being sick and then having a fall that needed medical attention. We got through it and thankfully my recovery and rest has been good. I have enjoyed phone calls regularly with our kids and grandkids and Darrell's Mom, as well as with friends. I also stay connected through facebook posts of our travels. The comments of friends is an amazing way to get bits of fun and connection with those we know. We have mapped out churches in England where we are traveling to visit on Sundays. I have made some very nice friends here through church. Even though I have moved on, we are staying connected.
