#85 June 18, 2022 Falmouth and Southampton UK. Begin Spectacular Norway Cruise! Visit Haugesund, Olden and Tromso.
Saturday Activities. Today we arrive Tromso, Norway on our cruise ship Island Princess. There are 1550 passengers plus crew on this vessel. The sky is clear. The forecast is for 60 degrees. We went on a small van tour with 9 total people to 3 fjords with stunning scenery. We saw reindeer and the location of the sinking of the World War 2 German battleship Turpitz.
Stunning Norway near TromsoSunday. Ship arrives Falmouth, England. Because there is so much weekend pleasure craft in the bay our ship anchors about a 30 minute tender ride from the dock. It is a cool and sunny day. We walk about 1 1/2 miles up to Pendennis Castle built by Henry the eight around 1540. We purchase the English Heritage membership so that we can visit many more places throughout the UK. Touring with us are our Aussie friends Tricia and Gary. The castle, walk and company was all so enjoyable. We had lunch at the castle cafe.
Our cruise friends Gary and Tricia at Pendennis Castle. Lunch at the castle cafe. Carrot sweet potato soup and sourdough bread. Steak pasty, a Cornish mainstay.Monday. This day we are in Southampton. This is the port that we are ending our 18 day Iceland cruise and beginning our 16 day Norway cruise. Our ship cases of Covid were increasing daily. The infected were put into isolation either in special quarentine rooms or in their own rooms with a small table placed in front of their door to place food. The ship required everyone who was staying on to get a covid test. Everyone who tested positive was expected to leave the ship. I don't know the exact number of positives, but we knew at least 3 of them. They didn't have symptoms and their spouses were testing negative. The number was anywhere between 100 and 400 people were not allowed to go on to Norway. We tested negative and left the ship for a day in Southampton. We walked 4 miles one way to see Netley Abbey ruins. My brother, Wayne and his wife Chris joined the cruise today. A work friend of Darrell's, Chad, joined the cruise today also. We set sail for Norway.
Tuesday. A sea day.
Wednesday. Haugesund, Norway. We went on a bus tour to a waterfall. The tour guide told us many things along the way that were historical or cultural.
Thursday. Olden, Norway. Had a phone call with Eric and grandson Owen, now 9 months old.
From the bus window. Driving to a glacier.Amazing waterfalls
Friday. A sea day. Met up with friend Cathy from Alabama. We caught up with our lives now.
Nomad Notes. This week Darrell has been building a profile for Trusted House Sitters. We learned about this from several people on the ship who use this service or are house sitters. We are looking at applying for some weeks while we are in the UK.
