#74 April 2, 2022 Nomad Diary: Saying Goodbye. Two Nights with Long-Ago Friends. Play Along Our Way.
Gibbs Garden near Ball Park, Georgia on Saturday
Week's Highlights:
Sunday: Our last Sunday with our church family. We got hugs, well wishes, and questions about our travels. It's bittersweet to be leaving those we have gotten to know and love through ups and downs of our lives together, growing in faith, study and worship together. I'm so grateful for the friends I have had here and who I carry in my heart. We ate lunch, played some cards, and visited with Darrell's brother Glenn and his wife Phoebe. For dinner we were guests to a young family from church with four adorable little children. We had loads of smiles this day! And I shed a few tears too.
Monday: We drove 80 miles north to rural Tennessee to visit my longtime business friend Peggy, meet her husband Alan and tour their custom home in the making! It's beautiful, massive and they are having a grand time with their dream project and soon to be home!
Alan and Peggy at their home in Tennessee.
Hopefully we can visit them again and check up on their progress! Next we went to lunch in Pulaski at an extremely quirky restaurant! We had no idea what we were stepping into when we went to 'The Yellow Deli' as our second choice for a restaurant. lol.

Rails to Trails path covered bridge heading toward Elkmont,Alabama then to Athens, Alabama. We returned to our airbnb and cooked dinner (tuna steaks, kasha with mushrooms, and roasted brocolli, carrots, onions, and turnips) before dark.
Tuesday: Breakfast and lunch at our airbnb. I meet up with a longtime friend for one more coffee date while Darrell goes to interview for his Global Entry number. An afternoon visit to grandson Owen and his parents.
Thursday night final dinner out with our three sons. Eric and wife Erin with son Owen. Wes and Samuel.Friday: Truck packed up and take a scenic drive (150 miles) from Somerville, Alabama to Dallas, Georgia. Found a beautiful county park for sightseeing on the way.

Friends at Gibbs in Ball Park, Georgia
We knew this family in Germany in 1985. Our first son, Eric was a baby then. Carol and her parents Mickey and Phyllis (not pictured son Mitch) were friends through church as Darrell (Army) and Mickey (Air Force) were US serviceman. We reconnected by Darrell being proactive on Facebook and knowing whereabouts of people we have known. We are guests in their home and getting to know them now.
Nomad Notes:
Each day at our airbnb we have been on our computers and on our phones working to get the syncing with google drive to work. Darrell has spent some considerable time organizing his files on the computer that he scanned in. He's also done some organizing of our trip next week to meet up with another long-ago friend who works at a federal wildlife refuge.
Eating between restaurants, friends homes and our own cooking in these final days before roadtripping, means taking what we have and enjoying it because it's amazing! It means we don't get it all used up perfectly and neatly. We have ends of items that we share or toss. On this upcoming Friday check-out, we are not packing our cooler with perishable foods. I'm thawing the cooler ice blocks so that they are dry and we will use our cooler as a storage for dry items.
My challenge: Pile of clothes getting organized for our current week ahead on the road to Ft. Lauderdale, and then to Vancouver, Washington, San Francisco, 18 day cruise back to Ft. Lauderdale.Organizing in packing cubes, then into a larger bag that I can roll and check-in on an air flight.
