#71 March 12, 2022 Nomad Diary: 3 Weeks to Our 'Take Off' for Our Next 7 Months Flying, Cruising, Airbnbing, Mostly Outside of the US.

Saturday snow in Somerville,  Alabama. View from our airbnb.

Week Highlights:

Darrell playing with Owen.

Darrell's birthday was Sunday, March 6th.

Monday we sold our 2011 Rav4 to Carmax for $3000 over blue book.  Used cars are selling at a premium now, and we had a desireable one that ended as a suprising and good investment for us.

Tuesday I met a longtime friend for coffee while Darrell went and got all new tires on our truck!

Wednesday:  picking up ordered Sourdough bread from Christine's German Bake Shop in Union Grove, Alabama.

Dessert at Christine's German Bake Shop at Union Grove, Alabama.

Thursday:  Babysit Owen for Eric's dentist appointment.  We went walking on some trails near Decatur. One trail was at Wheeler National Refuge where we learned that there is a winter nesting ground for the Sandhill Crane as well as many other northern birds.  The mass of these birds took off about 1-2 weeks ago and we missed it because we didn't know about it.  Now we know about it and also learned that this museum and welcome center is closing in March 13th- October to revamp.  Maybe next winter we can come back and see this spectacular sight that has been right here near our home all along!

Hiking near Cullman, Alabama.

Our homemade dinner:  Swordfish, kasha with feta, greek olives and walnuts, blackened okra, and my sweet potatoe with butter and lemon juice, Darrell a banana, hot tea.

Pancakes made by Darrell.

My 86 year old Dad, Richard, was taken to the hospital on Thursday evening after a fall. He was sent home on hospice on Saturday.

Saturday Activities:

We woke up to snow. We stayed in because of the snow and nixed all of our other plans. We did our morning exercise,  cooked breakfast, and busied ourselves with activities. I did some laundry and cleaning, Spanish on Duolingo,  some texting and phone calls about Dad's condition, and some computer messing about.

Snow day.

We decided to go out to dinner and we ended up at Cracker Barrel.  We had no plan yet to go to Dad's in Indianapolis. We prayed and waited.

Nomad Notes

Today plus 2 more Saturdays and we will be leaving our familiar Alabama area and be "on the road" for 7 months. We have 3 more Sunday worship times with our church family who we have been with for several years.

We like eating our food that we shop, chop and cook.  I am tempted to just load up our pantry items for a big selection like I did when we owned our house.  I can't do that especially now that we are going on the road in less than a month. Darrell and I have streamlined much of what we eat to save on waste as much as we can.  We eat some things similar and some things are different.  Darrell eats cheese and crackers everyday if he can.  I eat over easy eggs and sourdough toast and extra virgin olive oil every day if I can.

We both like soups and salads, with a bit of differences again between us.  We personalize details of our big salads as we are chopping them. Darrell eats fresh tomatoes and I prefer fresh fruit. Darrell has conceded to eat my homemade Italian dressing more often during our travels since he usually chooses a bleu cheese or ranch style dressing. I definitely want more cooked vegetables often preparing ahead baked sweet potatoes, cauliflower, roasted beets, etc.  I can make a meal of these and Darrell will eat them alongside a meat or sandwich.

He has influenced me to eat salads more regularly through the last decade as he made and carried them to work Monday through Friday.  We are making this Nomad pantry work for us and we like our food!

On Thursday I unloaded all of my clothes and packing onto the bed.  I began to repack and purge my items for our upcoming 7 month trip.  This much smaller amount of stuff still seems to bring a tension in me, but I know this is just a feeling and I will enjoy the trip once I get going.  I tell myself that I can get what I need along my way if I am missing something.
