#34 June 26, 2021 Gurley, Alabama: a little town about 15 miles east of Huntsville, AL
We are now living in our Gurley airbnb going on 2 weeks. I unpacked my suitcase and settled in for a month. I have also gone through my personal trunk clothes and keepsakes, culled some items for the thrift store, and considered my needs and wants now. I've thought about my extreme summer clothing, and how this may be the last season that I wear some of these items and I will again downsize my waredrobe. I'm excited that our season of travel to Europe is getting closer.
I'm relaxed in this place now that I've slept consistently in quiet and in comfort. I'm accepting of our chosen way of living now.
We have scoped out the few restaurants in Gurley, and have plans to eat at 2 during this month. They exist right on the highway portion of the town. A couple with higher marks are: El Coyote Mexican Restauran and Mr. PoBoy. There is also a BBQ place and a Country Cooking place, both requisite to a small southern town along with some fastfood chains.
Mr. PoBoy's owner and chef has an interesting story online and we are excited to be able to sample his menu soon.
Each day Darrell is working at the house online. This week has been teaching class with a partner teacher. Three days this week I have had private appointments at the pharmacy, and that takes me about 40 minutes driving one direction.
On Saturday we have our family get-together for lunch. This is the first time that we are all getting together to eat since March 2020. Back then, over a year ago, we didn't expect to be where we are now. We are here though and we are in a good place. We are happy to be coming through and getting back together. There have been differing opinions about the pandemic issues, but we are coming out on the other side and renewing family beginning now. Our family is changing. Eric and Erin moved into a larger house in anticipation of their 1st child coming in September! I am so excited for them and for us!
Our family lunch is at Viet Huong Restaurant, a regular favorite Vietnamese place for us. The specialty there is the 'claypot', a meal baked in a clay pot with rice, veg and meat. I often enjoy the pho chicken soup. We like everything on their menu!
I met up with my friend Laura at a sandwich shop in Belvedere, Tennessee. A stop midway between us in the middle of farm country. The drive is enjoyable and moreover with the beautiful weather.
I also had a phone call with my friend Sarah in North Carolina. We had lunch and a long game if Contract Rummy with Darrell's brother Glenn, wife Phoebe and daughter Kourtney. Bought a pair of shoes, had a tea break at the shop where Kourtney works, delivered a new buffet to Eric and Erin's, we're saved from having an accident on the highway(long and short story!), ate well, relaxed well, and talked and made plans for many things including our future phone use and how to use Google Voice and month to month Sim cards.
